How do I choose the right bottle cap?

Start with the neck finish on your bottle, such as 28-400 or 38-400, and buy a cap with the identical code. Then pick a cap material, plastic for most bottles or metal for glass food jars, and a liner that suits your product and whether you need a tamper-evident seal.

Understanding Neck Finishes

The first number in a neck finish is the outside diameter of the bottle thread in millimeters. The second number describes the thread style and height: 400 finishes have a short thread with about one full turn, while 410 finishes are a little taller. A 28-410 cap will not seal properly on a 28-400 bottle, so always match both numbers. Our glass bottles and jars list their finish in the product title to make matching easy.

Plastic or Metal Caps?

Plastic caps are polypropylene, light, inexpensive and available with the widest range of liners, including induction seals that bond to HDPE bottles for a tamper-evident seal. Metal caps are tinplate with a knurled edge and a premium look on glass jars; the plastisol-lined version gives an airtight seal suited to canning and vacuum packing.

Liner Types at a Glance

Liner What it does Example
Heat induction seal (HIS) Foil seal bonds to the bottle rim with an induction sealer for leak and tamper resistance 28-400 white cap with HIS for HDPE
3-ply foam (F217) Compressible general-purpose liner for liquids and dry goods 38-400 white or black foam-lined caps
Pressure sensitive (PS) Sticks to the rim when the cap is tightened, no sealer needed 38-400 black smooth cap with PS22 liner
Plastisol Hermetic seal for food and high-temperature use 38-400 gold metal cap

Specialty Closures

The 20-400 child resistant caps are sold by the case of 4,600 for pharmaceutical and supplement packaging. The 24-410 spout cap with red sealer tip, also called a Yorker cap, dispenses glues, oils and liquids through a small tapered tip.

Caps and Closures FAQs

What does 38-400 mean on a cap?

It is the neck finish: a 38 mm diameter with a 400 thread style. A 38-400 cap fits any bottle or jar with a 38-400 finish.

Do I need an induction sealer for HIS caps?

Yes. A heat induction seal liner bonds to the container rim only when passed under an induction sealer. Without one, choose a foam or pressure sensitive liner instead.

Can I use plastic caps on glass bottles?

Yes, as long as the neck finish matches. Plastic caps are used on both glass and plastic containers; HIS liners marked for HDPE are designed for HDPE bottles.

Do you sell caps by the case?

Some caps, such as the 20-400 child resistant caps, are sold by the case. Contact us for case or pallet pricing on any cap.
