What is a fiber drum used for?

A fiber drum is used to store and ship dry products such as powders, granules, resins, pellets, food ingredients and pharmaceutical materials. Its wide open top makes filling and scooping quick, and the paperboard body weighs far less than a steel drum, which keeps freight and handling costs down.

Fiber drums are built from heavy wound paperboard with a removable cover. They are not designed for free liquids unless lined, but for dry goods they are stiff, stackable and easy to dispose of or recycle when you are done.

Sizes and Weight Capacities

Fiber drums are sold by volume, but the weight rating usually decides which one you need. Here are the sizes in this category:

7.5 gallon Steel, lever lock 225 lb. capacity, non-UN
10 gallon Steel, lever lock UN rated, 225 lb., includes poly bag

Steel Cover or Fiber Cover?

Steel covers with a lever lock ring give the firmest seal and stand up to repeated opening, which is why they are used on the UN rated drums. Fiber covers are lighter and cheaper and work well for in-plant storage and one-way shipments of non-regulated goods, as on the 15 gallon fiber drum with fiber cover and the 61 gallon fiber drum.

UN Rated Fiber Drums

Fiber drums for hazardous solids carry a UN1G code. The 55 gallon UN rated fiber drum is marked UN1G/Y190/S: a fiber drum (1G) approved for Packing Group II and III solids (S) up to 190 kg gross mass. The 10 gallon UN rated fiber drum includes a 2 mil poly bag, which must be used for the drum to keep its UN rating. The 20 gallon UN fiber drum covers mid-size loads.

Food and Pharmaceutical Use

Fiber drums are common in food and pharmaceutical plants for dry ingredients. Some sizes, such as the 13 gallon fiber drum with steel cover and the 6 gallon drum, are listed as FDA compliant, while others, like the 61 gallon drum, are not intended for food. Check the product page, and use a food-grade liner bag where your process requires one.

Specialty Fiber Drums

  • Hot Flo: the 58 gallon Hot Flo fiber drum has a galvanized steel cover at both ends, so it can be opened from either side. It is designed for hot-flow applications common in the chemical industry.
  • Lined liquid-pack drum: the 55 gallon lined fiber drum has a fully lined interior for products that need corrosion-free containment.
  • Reconditioned: the reconditioned 55 gallon fiber drum comes in mixed colors with a compatible cover, a budget pick for powders, granules and storage.

How to Choose

  1. Weigh a typical fill and pick a drum whose lb. capacity exceeds it.
  2. Decide whether you need a UN rating for shipping hazardous solids.
  3. Choose a steel cover for repeated opening or regulated goods, a fiber cover for light-duty use.
  4. For food or pharma, confirm the drum is listed as FDA compliant and add a liner.

Fiber Drum FAQs

Can fiber drums hold liquids?

Standard fiber drums are made for dry products. For liquids, use the lined liquid-pack fiber drum or choose a plastic or steel drum.

How much weight can a fiber drum hold?

It depends on the drum. In this category, ratings run from 150 lb. on the 12 gallon drum to 400 lb. on the 55 gallon UN rated drum. Each product title or description lists its capacity.

Are fiber drums stackable?

Yes, fiber drums with covers can be stacked when filled with dry goods within their rated weight. Stack on a level surface and avoid damp storage areas, since moisture weakens paperboard.

Are fiber drums recyclable?

The paperboard body is generally recyclable once the metal parts are removed and the drum is clean, subject to your local recycling rules.
