How to Choose the Right IBC Tote
An intermediate bulk container (IBC) is a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) bottle held inside a galvanized steel cage and mounted on a pallet, so a forklift or pallet jack can move it full. A 275 gallon tote holds the same volume as five 55-gallon drums and a 330 gallon tote holds as much as six, in far less floor space. Choosing the right one comes down to four decisions: capacity, condition, valve and pallet.
What size IBC tote do I need?
For most buyers, a 275 gallon IBC tote is the right size. It replaces five 55-gallon drums, moves as a single pallet and comes in the widest range of grades and valves. Pick a 330 gallon tote when you want the most volume per pallet position, and a 135 gallon tote when space, weight or batch size is limited.
| Capacity | Drum equivalent | Grades in this category |
|---|---|---|
| 135 gallon (511 L) | About 2.5 drums | New, UN rated, 2" NPT or camlock valve, composite pallet |
| 275 gallon (1,041 L) | Five 55-gallon drums | New, anti-static, rebottled, standard and value reconditioned, black and gray, CageBuster plastic |
| 330 gallon (1,249 L) | Six 55-gallon drums | New, rebottled, standard reconditioned, CageBuster plastic |
New vs. Rebottled vs. Reconditioned IBC Totes
- New: a new HDPE bottle, new galvanized steel cage and new pallet. New bottles are made from FDA-compliant virgin resin, so they are the right pick for food and beverage products. Example: the new 275 gallon IBC tote with 2" NPT valve.
- Rebottled: a brand-new bottle fitted into a reconditioned cage and pallet. You get a clean, never-used bottle for less than a fully new tote, such as the rebottled 330 gallon IBC with 2" NPT valve.
- Standard reconditioned: bottle, cage and pallet are all reconditioned, and the bottle shows minimal to no staining from prior use. A good middle ground when appearance matters but a new bottle doesn't.
- Value reconditioned: built to the same standard as standard-grade totes, but the bottle may carry cosmetic staining or tint from earlier contents. The value reconditioned 275 gallon tote is the most economical way into IBC storage.
Reconditioned totes work well for rainwater, wash water, non-food chemicals and farm use. If the tote will ever hold something people eat or drink, buy new.
What Does UN Rated Mean on an IBC?
A UN rating shows the tote design has passed United Nations performance tests for shipping hazardous materials. Most totes here are marked UN31HA1/Y: "31" identifies an IBC for liquids, "HA1" a composite IBC with a plastic inner bottle and steel outer cage, and "Y" approval for Packing Group II and III (medium and low hazard) goods. CageBuster plastic totes are rated UN31H2/Y. If you ship regulated products, check the marking against your safety data sheet and DOT rules before filling. For non-hazardous storage, the rating is still a good sign of a well-built container.
Valves, Gaskets and Pallets
Every tote in this category drains through a 2" valve at the base. The difference is how you connect to it:
- 2" camlock: a quick-connect fitting for hoses and transfer pumps, ideal when you fill and empty often.
- 2" NPT: National Pipe Thread for permanent, threaded plumbing runs.
- 2" stubby ball valve: a compact valve used on the plastic IBC totes, such as the 330 gallon plastic IBC with stubby ball valve.
Most valves use EPDM gaskets, the standard choice for water-based liquids. Several totes offer Viton gaskets instead, which hold up better against oils, fuels and many solvents. Pallets come in steel, composite (plastic and galvanized steel) or plastic. The CageBuster plastic IBC tote drops the steel cage altogether: its HDPE tank uses a castle structure that resists warping and liquid pooling and sits on a 100% recycled plastic pallet.
Anti-Static and UV-Protected Totes
For static-sensitive liquids, the anti-static 275 gallon IBC pairs a static-dissipative polyethylene bottle with a Viton-gasketed camlock valve. For outdoor storage, the black 275 gallon IBC and gray UV-protected tote keep sunlight out, which helps limit algae in stored water.
Common Uses for IBC Totes
- Rainwater harvesting, irrigation and livestock water
- Liquid fertilizers and agricultural chemicals
- Food ingredients such as syrups, oils and juices (new totes only)
- Industrial chemicals, detergents and cleaning solutions
- Aquaponics systems and emergency water reserves

IBC Tote FAQs
Are your IBC totes food grade?
New totes use bottles made from FDA-compliant virgin resin and are the right choice for food and beverage products. Reconditioned totes have held other contents before, so use them for water, chemicals and other non-food liquids.
What is the difference between a 275 and a 330 gallon IBC tote?
A 275 gallon tote holds the same volume as five 55-gallon drums and a 330 gallon tote holds six. Choose 330 gallons to get the most volume per pallet, or 275 gallons for a lighter full load and the widest choice of grades and valves.
What does rebottled mean?
A rebottled IBC has a brand-new plastic bottle installed in a reconditioned steel cage and pallet. You get a clean bottle that has never held product, at a lower price than a fully new tote.
Should I choose a camlock or NPT valve?
Choose a 2" camlock valve if you connect and disconnect hoses or pumps often. Choose a 2" NPT valve if the tote will be plumbed into a fixed, threaded line.
